Man and Van in Ensbury Park

Ensbury Park was an aerodrome and then a racecourse before it was houses, and the estate that replaced it at the end of the 1920s was planned in one go rather than grown in pieces. That is why the avenues here run wider than the streets in the older districts, with verges and driveways built in from the start. For a removal it means the van usually parks close to the door, which takes the slowest part out of the day.

The housing is the bay-fronted semi of that decade, near enough all of it, and the houses share one pinch point: a narrow hall with the staircase turning at the bottom. Wardrobes and bed frames come apart rather than round that turn, and we plan for it instead of discovering it on the day. Where something will not go down the stairs at all, the bay window gives a second route out.
